Course Title: Elementary German 1

Course Description:
Training in communication, comprehension, pronunciation, elementary principles
of grammar, reading of prose, and simple composition; progress in oral-aural
skills emphasized throughout the course; introductory cultural material is given
to stimulate interest in and develop an understanding and appreciation of the
German-speaking people and countries.

B. Having listened to a 1-2
minute videotape selection in German, the student will be able to answer 5-10
true/false, short answer, or multiple choice questions in German related to
the selection.
C. Having listened to a speech,
dialog or narrative performed by classmates or by the instructor, students
will be able to answer 5-10 true/false, short answer, or multiple choice questions related to what
was said.
B. Students will generate 2-4
questions in German and be able to answer questions in complete sentences,
as appropriate.
C. Given a topic in German,
students will converse in German using sentences of 3-5 words which would be understandable to a
native speaker of German.
D. Students will be able to
perform the following tasks in spoken German using German that would be understandable
to a native speaker of German for 1-2 minutes:
1. describe self, others, family,
studies, holidays, moods, living arrangements and daily routine
2. discuss plans for the future,
likes and dislikes, weather, and leisure activities
3. describe actions that are
taking place in the present or past.
B. Having read a textbook narrative
or dialog of 50-100 words in German see Oral Production part IID #'s 1 and
2 for topics the student will be able to answer 5-10 questions requiring one-sentence
answers in German.
C. Having scanned a newspaper,
web page, or magazine advertisement, the student will be able to answer 3-5
short-answer questions in German related to the ad.
A. The student will respond
to written questions related to a topic under discussion with one-sentence
answers in German that would be understandable to a native speaker of German.
B. The student will create and write 5-10 original sentences
that describe self, others, family, studies, moods, living arrangements and
daily routine in German that would be understandable to a native speaker of
German.

Prerequisites:
There are no prerequisites. German 101 is an introductory course in German
intended for students with no previous knowledge of the language.
Course Goals:
We will learn all four basic language skills (listening, speaking, reading,
and writing), but the emphasis will be on developing proficiency
in oral/aural communication.
