Definite Articles:
a definite article in English: (the) in German: der, die, das (die: pronounced like the name "Dee," NOT like die as in, no longer alive).

In German the definite article displays the gender of the noun it precedes. Nouns can be masculine (der), feminine (die) or neuter (das).

In German, you must always learn the definite article, der, die, das, with nouns.
A noun is (a person, place, or thing) and always capitalized; even in the middle of a sentence.

The pronouns:
ich = I - as in - I like the car.

du = you (the informal form of you)
Use du if you know the person well.

Du
(capitalized at the beginning of a sentence) is the informal expression for you. Use this form to talk to friends, family, children. Ihr (capitalized at the beginning of a sentence) is the informal plural of du.

For example (zum Beispiel) Geht ihr zur Schule? - (Are you going to school?)

er = he
sie = she
es = it

wir = we

Sie
= you (always capitalized) is the formal version of you in both the singular and plural. This form of you is used to show respect or to talk with someone you do not know very well.

sie = they

ihr
= you (informal plural form of you)

German is the only language that capitalizes nouns not only at the beginning of a sentence, but at all times. For example (zum Beispiel): Ich sehe das Haus. (I see the house.)
